On November 8, Typhoon Haiyan – Yolanda hit the Philippines!

Like you, every day we followed  the tragic events that struck the Philippines.

On November 14 , the Centro philippin Chaplaincy  (Center for Filipino Chaplaincy ) in Rome called an emergency meeting at the Basilica di Santa Pudenziana.

Sr  Beth attended the meeting which aimed to coordinate activities to help victims of the super typhoon Yolanda. Mrs. Mercedes Tuazon, Philippine Ambassador to the Holy See,  Msgr. Pierpaulo Felicolo, Director of Migrants’ Office in the Diocese of Rome and a representative of the Philippine Ambassador to Italy also attended the meeting.  In addition, a representative from the Comune di Roma was present and expressed their solidarity with the Filipino people.

At St. Peter’s Basilica on November 21, Meny, Beth and Mary  attended the blessing by Pope Francis of the mosaic of San Pedro Calungsod,  the 2nd Filipino saint.

It is now installed in the Vatican Grottoes near the tomb of Pope Paul VI.  In his short message, the Pope encouraged the Filipinos in the midst of the national calamities to call on the Father like a child asking “why?”  Our prayer of lament will “draw the eyes and the tenderness of our heavenly Father.” The blessing was followed by the Eucharist presided over by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle.  This was also dedicated to the victims of Typhoon Yolanda.

On November 24, Beth  joined the Filipino communities gathered at the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore to pray for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. The officiant Mass was Auxiliary Bishop of Rome, Matteo Maria Zuppi. He ended his homily by saying in Filipino, "Bangon Pilipinas. Hindi ka nag-iisa. Sasama mo ang Roma" (Arise, Philippines. You are not alone. Rome is with you).

Through contact with our sisters Philippines and Singapore region and with the families of Sisters Meny and Beth, we were deeply united with all those who have been terribly affected, both in prayer and in finding ways to give practical help.

hat is why we, the Sisters of the Cenacle, have chosen to support a barrio Tindog.
